Perms: 5 Things to Know

Before getting a perm, it helps to know what it can do for you, how it's done and how to care for it. Here's what you need to know, in five points.

1. The benefits of a perm

A perm adds volume and movement to flat hair. The result looks more natural than with a curling iron.

You choose the shape and size of the curls, or simply a soft wave. A perm lasts 3 to 6 months on average. It isn't permanent: hair returns to its original texture as it grows.

2. How is a perm done?

A chemical solution acts on the outer layer of the hair, which can then take the desired shape. Hair is wound around rods of different sizes, depending on the effect you want.

After the processing time, the rods are removed and a neutralizer is applied. It closes the cuticle and sets the curl.

Avoid washing your hair for two days after your perm.

3. Perms for every hair type

A perm works on all hair types, as long as the processing time is adjusted. How long the result holds, however, depends on your hair.

  • Very straight hair: the curl holds for a shorter time.
  • Bleached hair: already weakened, it isn't suited to a perm. You can, however, get the perm first, then wait several weeks before bleaching.
  • Fine, sensitive hair: it absorbs products faster. The processing time is shorter, and it's best to nourish the hair well before the perm.

4. The risks of a perm

The main risk is dryness, especially if your hair is already dry. Regular nourishing masks help keep it healthy.

There is a risk of irritation, but it is very low: techniques have evolved and today's products are very gentle.

5. How to care for your perm

To make your curls or waves last longer:

  • let your hair air-dry, or use a diffuser rather than a regular blow-dryer, to respect the shape of your curls;
  • use styling mousse to define and shape your curls.

An occasional blowout is fine: your curls will come back at the next wash. Note that a perm with large curls doesn't last quite as long.
