Hair Extensions: How Do They Work?

More length, more volume or dimension in your color: hair extensions meet many needs. They suit hair at least 10 cm (4 inches) long, and the application method is chosen with your stylist, based on your hair and the result you want. Here's how they work.

Are extensions right for me?

Hair grows about one centimeter a month. Extensions give you the length or volume you want, without the wait.

A minimum length of 10 cm (4 inches) is needed for a natural-looking result. If your hair is shorter, you'll need to let it grow first. Your stylist then adapts the extensions to your hair type, to avoid breakage and loss of your own hair.

Define the result you want

The choice of extensions and application method depends on what you're looking for:

  • more length;
  • more volume;
  • dimension in your color;
  • straight or wavy hair.

Only a professional stylist can make the right assessment.

How are extensions applied?

Extensions are attached 1 cm from the roots. Application takes from 1 hour to 3 or 4 hours, depending on the method and the number of extensions. Two attachment methods are common.

Keratin bonds

The keratin is softened, then bonded to the hair. This method is often used to add length or create a balayage effect.

Tape-in extensions

The tapes are attached with a plant-based adhesive. Very common, this method suits all hair types and is mainly used to add volume. Tapes have the advantage of being repositionable.
